The Time-Value Of Money Time affects the value of money. It's the age-old adage that dollars today are worth more than dollars tomorrow. Grasping this important perspective goes a long way toward understanding the private paper marketplace. And it puts you in an excellent position to clarify certain financial decisions for your business. To understand this concept, think of the flow of dollars in terms of the old bromide - "A bird in the hand, is worth two in the bush!" You know you won't go hungry. You also know that you won't have to spend any more time trying to catch your dinner! What about those two birds in the bush? They present a whole series of decisions. For example, do you have to let go of the bird you have if you catch the two in the bush? Are there really two birds in the bush? Can you catch both? If you only catch one, will it be a better bird than the one you already have, and so on. The point is simple: All investments involve a certain amount of risk. You are giving up money you already have, for an anticipated future that is greater. And, in deciding the worth of the expected additional benefit, you must evaluate risk of loss, depreciation, and opportunity cost. Balancing these considerations is achieved through yield. The yield is your rate of return over a given period of time. Yield is used to judge use of a particular investment in itself, as well as in comparison to competing investment opportunities. The Time-Value-of-Money Intrinsic to yield calculations is time. Why is that? Well, lots of things can happen over time, and nobody knows with absolute certainty what it will bring. The longer you have to wait for your money, the greater the risk that you may not receive it or, at least, not all of it. Likewise, don't be deprived of the use of your money for the investment period and the collateral risk of lost opportunity with respect to alternatives. The relationship between time, risk, and value is a natural consequence. Two basic mathematical formulas bear this assumption out. Fortunately, it works the same whether you are in Tranquility, New Jersey, or Bountiful, Utah. Even better, the formulas are plugged into simple financial calculators, which are easy to use, inexpensive, and available anywhere. The first formula is where we take $1 and invest it at a set rate of interest over a period of years. We will know exactly how much the future will be at the end of that time. The second formula is the reciprocal of the first. It tells us what a future value is worth when discounting the investment to its present value relating the time-factor, yields are calculated as an annualized percentage rate. For example, we have a $10,000 note with a 10% annual interest rate, all due in one year. The first formula tells us the value of the note: $11,000 in one year's time, a yield of 10%. In two year's time, the value will be $12,100. In three year's time, the value will be $13,310. Conversely, the second formula tells us that $11,000, due in one year, is worth $10,000 today, when discounted to yield 10%. So, what should we pay for $13,310 to be received in three years, discounted to earn 10% on our money? The second formula tells us $10,000 is the present value or purchase of $13,310 due in three years, discounted to yield 10%. Yield is figured in one of two ways. First, compounding the future value as in example 1. Or second, discounting the present value as suggested in example 2. With either calculation, the value of money is directly related to the time when it is received. Discounting Here's a real-life scenario that demonstrates the importance of yield calculations. Kerry Cash is looking at two competing, $25,000 private mortgage notes to purchase and wants to receive a 14% return on his money. Anita Dough's note is payable monthly over 15 years, with a balloon due in ten years. Iwanna Hall's note is payable monthly over 20 years. Both are earning interest at 10% and both are comparably risk-rated. Each seller wants 82 cents on the dollar for the notes or $20,445. Kerry wants to earn his investment. Which note would yield Kerry his desired return, Anita's note or Iwanna's note? The payments on Anita's note total only $44,882, while Iwanna's note equals $57,902. However, when discounting present value to yield Kerry's 14% rate of return, the stream of payments for Anita's note equals $20,445 (82 cents on the dollar), while the discounted present value of Iwanna's note to only $19,401 (78 cents on the dollar). How does this occur? Iwanna's note will not be paid off for 20 years, whereas Anita's note is paid in ten years. His is the power of time when it relates to money. This is not true. Since 1993, private residential paper assets have grown from $75 billion to approximately $100 billion. That’s $4 billion per year in new private paper created over the past six years. Why is FCM destined to be a giant? Because History will repeat itself! I have been a student of MLM for about 10 years, with most of my training coming from the telecom industry. The principle of Network/Direct Marketing is the vehicle by which any great product or service can be moved. I have done extensive research on three Network/Direct Marketing companies, their products, the era when they began, their timing, and the acceptance of the products by society when they launched their products. The first one is the Tupperware Corporation. Tupperware was developed and founded, in 1938 by Earl Tupper. In 1946 they introduced Tupper Plastics to hardware and department stores. These were mom and pop organizations since there weren’t any major retail stores like we have today. Tupperware was not accepted at first, because societies’ thinking was not along the lines of sealing food in a plastic container. Retail sales from these stores lagged. So, in 1951, Mr. Tupper pulled all of his products from the stores and launched a network marketing campaign. By the 1970's Tupperware was a household name throughout America. Today, somewhere in the world, there is a Tupperware demonstration every two seconds! Sales now exceed $1.2 Billion annually! The second is Shaklee. Shaklee was founded in 1956 by Dr. Forrest C. Shaklee along with his sons. Their products were nutritional supplements. The thinking of society at this time, and in the medical industry, was not on nutritional supplements. Only after WWII did the think of the medical community begin to change from curing diseases to maintaining proper health to prevent diseases. This helped fuel the growth for Shaklee. But Shaklee never took off until the 1970's when they saw explosive growth, using the vehicle of Network/Direct Marketing. There are a couple of items that I’d like to discuss about these companies before I talk about the third one. Both companies were developed in a time in America when neither of these products were heard of or needed by society. So for approximately 20 years they had to educate people that they needed these products. When society accepted what they had to offer, these companies exploded in sales. Notice how long it took for these companies to get where they were going. 86% of the American people do not like change; they had to be educated to see that they needed these products. This takes stamina, money and even patience. In steps our third company, Excel Communications. This company is different from the other two because of the products and the thinking of society at the time of its formation. During the deregulation of the AT&T giant in 1984 everyone in America had a telephone and long distance service, or access to them. In other words, “You did not have to educate the masses about their product or service; they already had it!” All they had to do was introduce a new service under a different name. Excel was started by Kenny Trout in 1988 and became the fourth largest telecom company in America, publicly traded on the NYSE, in just eight years! A Multi billion dollar giant in just eight years! Do you see the difference in these three companies? The key difference is the education of a society about a product. The first two had to educate society about their products while the third just rode the wave! Now comes, Free Card Matrix (FCM). Let’s compare! Who do you know that doesn't have a credit card? Or even better, who do you know who has never heard of a credit card? My point is that you don't have to educate the masses that they need our product. They already have it! Just like the telecom giant of the 90's, there are no products to purchase, no inventory, no collections, no buying to stay qualified every month! Just referring and making money! In my opinion, based upon the model of Network Marketing, and the timing with FCM, there will be major income made over the next few years! All the elements that turned Excel into a giant are found in FCM. Timing, the product, and the acceptance of our product due to the fact that the masses already use and accept it (900 million credit cards in circulation (USA only), that number increases by 8% every year!). An email from Jed, one of R. Dalbey's employees that you should read. One of my managers really surprised me the other day. Maybe I shouldn’t have been so floored, but I was. He shared some great ideas with me that are so simple yet so valuable, I’m shocked by how powerful they were. I’ll share with you what Jed, one of my young department managers, came up with in just a minute. As you probably know, I’m not a college graduate with all sorts of higher education and graduate degrees. I’m more of a “school of hard knocks” kind of guy. While I can say I’m very fortunate to be successful now, I’ve definitely suffered some ups and downs in the past, and I’ve learned lots of practical “know-how” in both corporate and personal life along the way. Learning the note business from the ground up and building The Dalbey Wealth Institute has forced me to learn many practical life lessons. And, I’m sad to admit – I’m no spring chicken anymore. It’s been a while since anyone’s asked me for my ID before serving me a glass of wine! Just being around for a few decades has a way of building wisdom and knowledge too. But sometimes, because our hectic lifestyles has us so distracted with “the important stuff,” we need a little reminder on the things we already know in our hearts – for someone to point out the obvious. If you’re like me, you’re constantly running around, trying to get four things done at once. No wonder it’s easy to lose sight of the big picture. That’s why I think what Jed expressed to me and the other employees at our company is so powerful. It often takes such little effort, but it can truly make someone's day. 5. Be as generous as you can be. One way or another, it will come back to you ten-fold. 6. Dress for success. Always over-dress before you under-dress. It will change the way both others perceive you, as well as the way you perceive yourself. 7. Be honest, and be ethical. This is the best way to win over friends, colleagues, clients, and anyone that you come across. What it all boils down to is that all relationships - personal and business - are about trust and respect. 8. Exercise and drink lots of water. You will feel better, you will have more energy, and you will need less sleep each day, effectively giving you more time in each day! 9. When you appreciate something someone has done for you, let them know. Don’t assume they know you are grateful for their assistance! It will make them more inclined to do it again in the future, and it will create or strengthen your bond with that person. 10. Try to learn something new each day. Maybe it's just a new word, maybe it's a fact about an old friend, or maybe it's just something you never noticed before. What do you think? There’s nothing there that costs a lot of money to do, or will take a huge commitment to pull off. These are things that all of us can take to heart to improve our lives, in business or in our personal relationships – starting right NOW. One last thought – the tip that Jed put on his list last is possibly the best one. Remember at the beginning of this blog, I said, “one of my employees surprised me”? Obviously, being the goal-oriented guy that I am, this kind of thing makes me a little angry. So, let me take a minute to stop your would-be abandonment of your resolution with a little bit of advice. Listen – no matter how far you are from your resolution after a month and half, you DON’T have to give up. You just need to refine…. People ask me the same question all the time: “What’s your secret to success?” And let me tell you… the answer is really darn simple! I plan to succeed. It sounds simple, right? Yet it’s often the most overlooked element to success. Since I caught you in time, you have a good chance to put that piece of advice on your New Years Resolutions – albeit just a little behind schedule. Here’s the truth: Most people fail to follow through on New Year’s resolutions for one of three reasons: The resolution isn’t specific and measurable. The resolution is too extreme. They have no plan to succeed. Let’s look at those… The resolution isn’t specific and measurable Too many people say things like “I resolve to lose some weight” or “I resolve to make more money.” Good resolutions, but they leave too much open to interpretation. If you lose a pound, that’s some weight, right? If you get a $50 bonus at work, that’s some money, right? It was the worst feeling in the world! I always had stacks of unpaid bills, creditors calling me and a real uneasy feeling in my stomach. And I wasn’t the only one. It seemed like everyone I knew had the same problem. The truth is, debt has reached epic proportions in our society. Whether you're rich, poor, or somewhere in the middle, chances are you've got debt that's working against your dreams of financial independence. But it doesn’t have to be that way. In fact, I want you to take some action today to start getting out of debt. You’ll be AMAZED at how much better you feel when you don’t have bills hanging over your head. (And you don’t have to win the Powerball jackpot to get out of even the most unbearable debt!) I’ve been there, and now I’m debt free. Here a few tips I used a long the way: 1. If you're in over your head with multiple credit card accounts, you need to destroy your cards right away. Just keep one card for emergencies. Pay more than the minimum payment every month – in fact, pay as much as you can. Money in your account isn’t making you money as fast as your unpaid credit card debt is losing you money! 3. Pay off the credit card with the highest interest rate first and pay the rest in descending order. If you tackle the biggest money drain right away you could make a huge impact on your cash flow in a matter of one month. 4. After you pay off one credit card, don't let up. Apply the money you've been paying that particular company to paying off another credit card or another outstanding bill. Set a “credit pay-off budget” and stick to it as you pay down cards. Once you get to the last one, it will seem easy! 5. Don’t “rotate” your debts – pay every one every month. It’s easy to pay a few on time one month, and switch around for the next month. That just keeps you further behind. 6. If you own a home, consider taking out a home equity loan. You could save hundreds, possibly thousands of dollars by paying off your high-interest credit debt by moving those balances into a fixed-rate home equity loan. 7. Pay additional money towards your mortgage principal. This can add up to tens of thousands of dollars! 8. Sometimes having an office as part of your home can be distracting. And when you’re the boss, setting your hours and making sure business gets done is all up to you. Being successful as an entrepreneur at home can take more discipline that just waking up at a set time and showing up at a job for 8 or 9 hours each day. But the potential rewards – independence and unlimited income, just to mention two – are always worth it. Use these recommendations to make your home-based business the most effective and profitable possible. First of all, making a separation between your home office and the rest of your living space is key to creating a productive in-home work environment. Why? Because making that distinction will reduce distractions, let you focus on the task at hand, and help others to respect your privacy. If possible, create a separate ROOM for your office – not just a corner of an existing room, like the den. Having a door that you can close is really important to create some isolation – especially if children or other family members are around the house during your office hours. Do Your Potential Customers Forget About You? [By: Tom Kulzer] Your web business probably gets product inquiries from potential customers around the globe. Inquiries come via e-mail and your web site, and you try to send information to each hot prospect as quickly as you can. You know that you can drastically increase the likelihood of making a sale by satisfying each person's need for information quickly! But, after you've delivered that first bit of information to your prospect, do you send him any further information? If you are like most Internet marketers, you don't. When you don't follow that initial message with additional information later on, you let a valuable prospect slip from your grasp! This is a potential customer who may have been very interested in your products, but who lost your contact information, or was too busy to make a purchase when your first message reached him. Often, a prospect will purposely put off making a purchase, to see if you find him important enough to follow up with later. When he doesn't receive a follow up message from you, he will take his business elsewhere. Are you losing profits due to inconsistent and ineffective follow up? Following up with leads is more than just a process - it's an art. In order to be effective, you need to design a follow up system, and stick to it, EVERY DAY! If you don't follow up with your prospects consistently, INDIVIDUALLY, and in a timely fashion, then you might as well forget the whole follow up process. Consistent follow up gets results! When I first started marketing and following up with prospects, I used a follow up method that I now call the "List Technique." I had a large database containing the names and e-mail addresses of people who had specifically requested information about my products and services. These prospects had already received my first letter by the time they requested more information, so I used the company's latest news as a follow up piece. I would write follow up newsletters every now and then, and send them, in one mass mailing, to everyone who had previously requested information from me. While this probably did help me win a few additional orders, it wasn't a very good follow up method. Why isn't the "List Technique" very effective? * The List Technique isn't consistent. Proponents of the List Technique tend to only send out follow up messages when their companies have "big news". * List Technique messages don't give the potential customer any additional information about the product or service in question. He can't make a more informed buying decision after receiving a newsletter! If someone is wondering whether your company sells the best knick-knacks, what does he care that you've just moved your headquarters? * List Technique messages convey a "big list" mentality to your potential customers. When I used to write follow up messages using the List Technique, I was writing news bulletins to everyone I knew! I should have been sending a personal message to each individual who wanted to know more about my products. What follow up method really works? Following up with each lead individually, multiple times, but at set intervals, and with pre-written messages, will dramatically increase sales! Others who use this same technique confirm that they have all at least doubled the sales of various products! In order to set this system up, though, you need to do some planning. First, you'll need to develop your follow up messages. If you've been marketing on the Internet for any length of time, then you should already have a first informative letter. Your second letter marks the beginning of the follow up process, and should go into more detail than the first letter. Fill this letter with details that you didn't have the space to add to the first letter. Stress the BENEFITS of your products or services! Your next 2-3 follow up messages should be rather short. Include lists of the benefits and potential uses of your products and services. Write each letter so that your prospects can skim the contents, and still see the full force of your message. The next couple of follow up messages should create a sense of urgency in your prospect's mind. Make a special offer, giving him a reason to order NOW instead of waiting any longer. After reading these follow up messages, your prospect should want to order immediately! Phrase each of your final 1 or 2 follow up messages in the form of a question. Ask your prospect why he hasn't yet placed an order? Try to get him to actually respond. Ask if the price is to high, the product isn't the right color or doesn't have the right features, or if he is looking for something else entirely. (By this time, it's unlikely that this person will order from you. However, his feedback can help you modify your follow up letters or products, so that other prospects will order from you.) The timing of your follow up letters is just as important as their content. You don't want one prospect to receive a follow up the day after he gets your initial informative letter, while another prospect waits weeks for a follow up! Always send an initial, informative letter as soon as it is requested, and send the first follow up 24 hours afterwards. You want your hot prospects to have information quickly, so that they can make informed buying decisions! Send the next 2-3 follow up messages between 1 and 3 days apart. Your prospect is still hot, and is probably still shopping around! Tell him about the benefits of your products and services, as opposed to your competitors'. You will make the sale! Send the final follow up messages later on. You certainly don't want to annoy your prospect! Make sure that these last letters are at least 4 days apart. Following up effectively seems complicated, but it doesn't have to be! So many potential customers are lost because of poor follow up - don't you want to be one of the few to get it right? In 2002, the company will produce it's six billionth can of the processed food product. But that mark was passed long ago in the world of Internet spam. * Who Cooked This!? Be Sure. * The Final Blow Who Cooked This!? (How did it all start?) The modern meaning of the word "spam" has nothing to do with spiced ham. In the early 1990's, a skit by British comedy group Monty Python led to the word's common usage. "The SPAM Skit" follows a couple struggling to order dinner from a menu consisting entirely of Hormel's canned ham. Repetition is key to the skit's hilarity. The actors cram the word "SPAM" into the 2.5 minute skit more than 104 times! This flood prompted Usenet readers to call unwanted newsgroup postings "spam." The name stuck. Spammers soon focused on e-mail, and the terminology moved with them. Today, the word has come out of technical obscurity. Now, "spam" is the common term for "Unsolicited Commercial E-Mail", or "UCE." Why Does Bad Spam Happen to Good People? Chances are, you've been spammed before. Somehow, your e-mail address has found it's way into the hands of a spammer, and your inbox is suffering the consequences. How does this happen? There are several possibilities. Backstabbing Businesses Businesses often keep lists of their customers' e-mail addresses. This is a completely legitimate practice and, usually, nothing bad comes of it. Sometimes though, the temptation to make a quick buck is too great, and these lists are sold or rented to outside advertisers. The result? A lot of unsolicited e-mail, and a serious breach of trust. Random Address Generation Computer programs called random address generators simply "guess" e-mail addresses. Over 100 million hotmail addresses exist - howhard could it be to guess some of them? Unfortunately for many unsuspecting netizens - not too hard. Many spammers also guess at "standard" addresses, like "support@yourdomain.com", "info@yourdomain.com", and "billing@yourdomain.com." Web Spiders Today's most insidious list-gathering tools are web spiders. All of the major search engines spider the web, saving information about each page. Spammers use tools that also spider the web, but save any e-mail address they come across. Your personal web page lists your e-mail address? Prepare for an onslaught! Chat Room Harvesting ISP's offer vastly popular chat rooms where users are known only by their screen names. Of course, spammers know that your screen name is the first part of your e-mail address. Why waste time guessing e-mail addresses when a few hours of lurking in a chat room can net a list of actively-used addresses? The Poor Man's Bad Marketing Idea It didn't work for the phone companies, and it won't work for e-mail marketers. But, some spammers still keep their own friends-and-family-style e-mail lists. Compiled from the addresses of other known spammers, and people or businesses that the owner has come across in the past, these lists are still illegitimate. Why? Only you can give someone permission to send you e-mail. A friend-of-a-friend's permission won't cut it. Stop The Flood to Your Inbox Already drowning in spam? Try using your e-mail client's filters - many provide a way to block specific e-mail addresses. Each time you're spammed, block the sender's address. Spammers skip from address to address, and you may be on many lists, but this method will at least slow the flow. Also, use more than one e-mail address, and keep one "clean." Many netizens find that this technique turns the spam flood into a trickle. Use one address for only spam-safe activities like e-mailing your friends, or signing on with trustworthy businesses. Never use your clean address on the web! Get a free address to use on the web and in chat rooms. If nothing else helps, consider changing screen names, or opening an entirely new e-mail account. When you do, you'll start with a clean, spam-free slate. This time, protect your e-mail address! Stay Off Spammed Lists in the Future Want to surf the web without getting sucked into the spam-flood? Prevention is your best policy. Don't use an easy-to-guess e-mail address. Keep your address clean by not using it for spam-centric activities. Don't post it on any web pages, and don't use it in chat rooms or newsgroups. Before giving your clean e-mail address to a business, check the company out. Are sections of its user agreement dedicated to anti-spam rules? Does a privacy policy explain exactly what will be done with your address? The most considerate companies also post an anti-spam policy written in plain English, so you can be absolutely sure of what you're getting into. Think You're Not a Spammer? Be Sure. Many a first-time marketer has inadvertently spammed his audience. The first several hundred complaints and some nasty phone messages usually stop him in his tracks. But by then, the spammer may be faced with cleanup bills from his ISP, and a bad reputation that it's not easy to overcome. The best way to avoid this situation is to have a clear understanding of what spam is: If anyone who receives your mass e-mails did not specifically ask to hear from you, then you are spamming them. Stick with your gut. Don't buy a million addresses for $10, no matter how much the seller swears by them! If something sounds fishy, just say no. You'll save yourself a lot in the end. The Final Blow The online world is turning the tide on spam. In the end, people will stop sending spam because it stops working. Do your part: never buy from a spammer.
